To achieve level 3 you need to:

Suggest ways of carrying out experiments to answer a scientific question
Carry out a fair test
Carry out experiments using the equipment you have been given
Observe what is happening as you carry out the experiment
Write down your results
Identify any pattern in your results
Explain your observations and patterns in your results
Suggest how to improve your experiment
To achieve level 4 you need to:
Achieve a level 3 and: Plan how to carry out an experiment Identify the variables in the experiment Choose suitable equipment Demonstrate which variables you need to control and which you need to change Write a prediction explaining what you think will happen Collect results and record them in a table Produce a bar chart of your results Explain what your results show Give reasons for any changes you could make to improve your work
To achieve level 5 you need to:
Achieve a level 4 and: Select the appropriate equipment for the experiment and use it effectively Identify the best way of carrying out the experiment Explain which are the key variables in the experiment Relate your prediction to your scientific knowledge Repeat experiments and calculate average results Produce line graphs of your results Explain what your results show using scientific theory Suggest how to improve your method
To achieve level 6 you need to: Achieve a level 5 and: Use scientific information to plan your experiment. Select the appropriate equipment to allow you to make precise measurements Calculate averages to 2 decimal points Produce line graphs with appropriate scales. Where appropriate draw lines of best fit. Identify any results that do not fit into the pattern Relate your conclusions to your predictions and to scientific theory Explain how to improve your method to get more reliable results, and why these modifications will make your results more reliable.
